We are in Augusta, Georgia. It is Mother’s Day when 17-year-old Tony Cavallo decides to work on his 1964 Chevrolet. The car is raised on a jack, but something goes wrong: the support gives way and the heavy body falls on the boy, crushing him to the ground.
Tony is trapped, unable to breathe, his body crushed by the weight of over a ton of metal. Angela, drawn by the screams, runs outside. The scene before her eyes is desperate: her son is suffocating to death, and every second that passes could be his last.
There is no time to think, no time to call for help. With a scream, Angela grabs the car and, defying all laws of physics, lifts the Chevrolet off the ground, enough to allow the neighbors, who rushed over after hearing the screams, to drag Tony out.
Only a few moments, but enough to make the difference between life and death. Tony was taken to the hospital and saved.
Doctors and scientists described Angela’s action as a case of “hysterical strength” or superhuman strength, a rare but documented phenomenon: in situations of extreme danger, the human body releases such a large amount of adrenaline that it allows for normally impossible feats. It is the same mechanism that explains how some people can break chains, lift enormous weights, or perform incredible physical feats when their life, or that of a loved one, is in danger.
The story of Angela Cavallo became a symbol of this mysterious phenomenon: a demonstration that, when faced with the instinct to protect those we love, human beings can exceed their limits.
Angela was not an athlete, nor was she a particularly strong woman. She was simply a mother. But in that moment, her determination and love were more powerful than any physical barrier.
